How many times have you wanted to hug your mother and tell her thank you for all she has done for you? For Anna Jarvis in 1908 this desire was so great that she helped create a whole day of Mom-thanking. Anna, whose mother was an early advocate of a day for mothers, carried on to completion the effort to establish an annual Mother’s Day. She planned and arranged for a church service on May 10, 1908, which was dedicated to expressing gratitude for mothers everywhere.
Since that day, the observation of Mother’s Day has spread internationally. And on May 9, 1914, President Wilson issued a proclamation declaring the second Sunday in May to be observed as Mother’s Day throughout America.
And the carnation? Anna also initiated the custom of wearing carnations in order that mothers might be further honored … and because it was her mother’s favorite flower!
But what is a mother? It has been said that a mother is America’s hardest working career girl! She is talented and useful. She is a wonder of ideas and a miracle of love. Mothers can rock, change, cuddle and kiss babies, not to mention all else in between.
A mother picks up toys and newspapers one minute, and returns a few hours later to do it all over again, a smile usually still on her face.
Mothers keep fathers happy – as well as the children, the neighbors, and all the relations. Mothers give sympathy and always try to see both sides in a quarrel. This woman can kiss away a hurt, smooth over upset feelings, and worry about the family budget … all at one time.
Mothers lend their sons to summer camps, football and basketball teams, and later, to their country. Somewhere in between, she learns to reluctantly hand over the car keys, even though she still has a few last minute errands to run.
Mothers raise their daughters to be good wives for someone else’s son – and they hold back the tears all the while.
Mothers are diplomats, philosophers, ambassadors and Sunday School teachers, who work part-time as carpenters and plumbers when they are not being a nurse or a judge.
Mothers are the foot of the family and the stamina of our country …
Mothers are God’s gifts to us all.
In Christ’s service,
