Surprising Words From Our Savior’s Passion.

The overall theme for our Lenten season this year is See His Cross! In this series, we will be given insights into God’s plan of salvation for us as Jesus goes on His journey to the cross and His resurrection.

The Secret of the Fish

Recently I read a devotion titled “The Secret of the Fish.” This devotion provides and answer why we need to come to worship. I would like to use this opportunity and share it with you …

Do you understand the secret of the fish? If you were talking to a boy who suddenly stooped down and drew a fish in the sand, would you understand his message?

Once Christians used the sign of a fish to keep a secret and to tell their faith, both at once. At that time it was dangerous to be a Christian. A Christian might be arrested and whipped, or perhaps burned alive or fed to hungry lions. So the Christians had to keep their faith in Jesus secret.

But Christians also needed to tell one another their faith. They needed to strengthen one another. But what could they use for a secret sign? What signal would keep their secret from outsiders and yet help them to tell one another their faith?

The first letters of the words “Jesus Christ, God’s Son, Savior” happened to spell the Greek word for fish. So the Christians chose the outline of a fish for their secret sign or code. In those days the picture of a fish on a dark, wet wall in an underground tunnel meant “Christians worship here.” Scrawled in the sand by a man while you were talking with him, it was his way of saying “I am a fellow Christian.”

We don’t need secret signs anymore. But we still need to tell one another that we are followers of Jesus. We need to share our faith with fellow Christians. That way we help one another to grow stronger in faith.

This is why we cannot just stay at home and worship alone – or just listen to services on radio, TV, or on the internet. We need to worship together with other Christians in church.

And we have to do more than just listen in church. In our hymns and prayers and praises we need to tell one another the same message that was once the secret of the fish: “I am a Christian. I believe in Jesus Christ.” Thus we help one another to grow in faith.

To close, may we see that each day is a day the Lord has given to rejoice in His blessings, His opportunities He has given. And to that end, with the Spirit’s help, we will

- Attend worship together

- Attend Bible Study and Sunday School

- Use the gifts God has given us.

2012 - An Opportunity to Rejoice and Be Glad

This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it. Psalm 118:24

2012 will soon be underway. For most of us, going from 2011 to 2012 will not involve a lot of big changes in our daily routines. In fact, the biggest change many of us will make (or at least attempt to make) is to write 2012 instead of 2011. With the coming of a new year, we not only have a day, but a whole year that God is giving us so that we can rejoice and be glad.

But why rejoice? Why be glad? What great things does 2012 have in store for us that 2011 did not have?

If we live for ourselves – with the attitude of eating, drinking, and being merry – 2012 will probably have nothing for which we can rejoice and be glad. You see, if that is our attitude, we need many things to keep us happy. Needing things, we will have to work to be happy. The more we have, the more we will want, and the more we will have to work. Living for ourselves become a vicious circle in which we have either no time or very little time to eat, drink and be merry.

Looking away from ourselves, 2012 will present many opportunities to rejoice and be glad. Joshua knew that as he said to the whole congregation of Israel: … choose this day whom you will serve … as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord. (Joshua 24:15) Serving the Lord we will see the many opportunities we have to rejoice and be glad.

And where will we see these opportunities? We will see them as we are in God’s Word. There we see how He has blessed His people in the past, and knowing that God is a faithful God, He will be with us as well. God has made that promise, and He will keep it. His love and His faithfulness is constant and endures forever.

That is a reason to rejoice. We have a God who loves us so much that He sent His Son that we might have life – abundant life filled with rejoicing. As we live for Him in 2012 may we find this year (as every year) blessed in His service.

Christmas Greetings from the Jabs

Christmas 2011

Greetings in the name of our Newborn King,

Each year as I begin my preparations for Christmas, I read once again the Christmas story. As I found myself doing that this year, one thing stood out in my mind – how the people responded and reacted to the message.

In the gospel of Luke, we see the angel Gabriel coming to Mary. Even though she was troubled at first, her response was that she was the Lord’s servant; may it be as the angel had said. And after everything had happened, Luke tells us “Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart.”

We also see the shepherds – rugged people of the day who were used to living off the land and defending their sheep. After the angels left them their response was: “Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.” And later they “spread the word” and “returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen.”

If we turn to the gospel of Matthew, we find the same thing regarding the visit of the Magi. They found the Babe of Bethlehem, bowed down and worshiped him, and offered their gifts. And although we are not specifically told, most likely they returned home and spread the word about the Savior of the world just like the shepherds had done.

This year you and I once again have the privilege of traveling to Bethlehem. As we arrive, we see the Babe of Bethlehem. Having seen the Babe, may we look beyond the manger and know the purpose for which He came – to be our Savior King. And then, like the shepherds, the Wise Men, and the angels of the first Christmas, may we join together in “glorifying and praising God for all the things we have heard and seen” both today and throughout the coming days.

Good News of Great Joy

Have you noticed how much things have changed? No matter how old we are, we can look back in our lives and see the many changes that have taken place throughout the years.

During our recent “Time With Pastor” meetings, one of the changes that people commented on was the fact of how our church buildings are not as full as they used to be. The question “Where are the people?” was asked more than once. And following that question, it was noted that without all our members, without more members and people, how can we be talking about an addition or a new building?

One of the changes that I often think about is how attendance at Christmas services has changed. No matter what church building a person would go into, it seemed as though everyone was there on Christmas. Many times it meant setting up chairs in the aisles or perhaps having people stand during the service. Today the scene is far different.

Today is also different from that first Christmas as well. Listen to a couple portions from Luke’s account of the Christmas story …

And the angel said to them, "Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of a great joy that will be for all the people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.” … When the angels went away from them into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, "Let us go over to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has made known to us." And they went with haste …

Luke 2:10-11, 15-16

They went with haste to see what had happened. On Christmas this year, will we join them and go with haste to hear the message of salvation – unto you is born … a Savior? That is the best Christmas present ever – and it is free.

It is a shame – and even sad – that mostly (if things are the way they have been in the past) our church buildings and countless others like them will not be full to hear the good news of great joy for all people. At the same time, Lambeau Field (and others like it), will be full. Countless people will willingly spend thousands of dollars for fleeting joy rather than the good news of great joy – the joy the angels meant when the multitudes joined in praising God … "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased!" Luke 2:14

My prayer is that when Christmas comes this year – we too go with haste to see and hear this thing that has happened, which the Lord has made known to us. How blessed we are – for that Babe born in Bethlehem lived a perfect life. Then He took our sins upon Himself, and in exchange gave us the gift of the eternal, abundant life earned for us by His suffering, death and resurrection. And for that we can glorify and praise God for all we have heard and seen.

After coming and seeing, may we – like the shepherds that first Christmas – make known what we have had been told concerning this child. What countless opportunities God has given us to reach out with that message – whether that be through the programs we have, or perhaps considering additions/new buildings to better spread that message in our respective congregations. As we continue to work for the Lord, others will wonder at what we tell them. And then may we, like Mary, treasure up all these things, pondering them in our hearts.

The Lord is Good

Oh, the Lord is good to me

And so I thank the Lord

For giving me the things I need –

The sun and the moon and the appleseed

The Lord is good to me. Amen.

Times are tough! In order to see that all a person has to do is pick up a newspaper and read the headlines. As we do that, we also see that there is a lot for which we can be thankful. Sure, things might not be that way we like them, but nothing ever is.

How great is our God – He looks out for us and is always with us to give all we need to support our body and life. During this month we have the opportunity, in a special way, to gather and thank God for what He has done for us. Every day we should stop and reflect, and when we do, we cannot count all our blessings. Even though we should stop and give thanks, it so often gets lost in the shuffle.

In November, we have no excuse. The government has set aside a special day – November 24^th – which is known as Thanksgiving Day. On that day, we, as Christians, pause, look at our blessings, and then thank God for the abundance we have as His children. At Trinity and St. Thomas, we have two special opportunities to do this: 7:30 pm Wednesday, November 23^rd at Trinity and 8:30 am Thursday, November 24^th at St. Thomas.

At these services, we will join our hearts and voices to give thanks to our great God. Until that time, may our prayer be:

For the daily task, a little too big and a little too hard for my present ability, and for the daily increase of power that comes to meet it;

For the trial that comes to strengthen and purify and not destroy;

For the opportunity to give that makes me richer;

For the unspeakable honor of working with You and meeting some need that You have of me, which I cannot understand, but can believe;

For the friend who walks with me shoulder to shoulder through the valley of the shadow and then with a glad face and ringing voice grips my hand as we climb together the bright hills of victory;

For the loyal and sympathetic friends near and far – you know the number of them – who inspire me and help me and, best of all, believe in me;

For the past because it is past and because it is necessary in Your providence and because it held the beginnings of all things now cherished;

For the present because it is the only time which I can claim with certainty for doing the things that must be done and because it is full of opportunity and the beginnings of greater and better things;

For the future, which, though it is only a hope and a purpose, holds bright visions that beckon me on and challenge me to do my best today;

For happiness, of which You have given me a generous share;

But more for joy, which You will not limit, as You will not limit obedient and loving service;

For Your provision, Your providence, and Your promises, and for the certainty gained from experience that You hear and answer the cry of need, and therefore will accept the thanksgiving of eager, grateful hearts …

One Necessary Thing

I am sure you are all well aware of the fact that most of our education programs are underway. It is great to see people involved in the study of God’s Word.

Like Paul, I give thanks to God for those who have gone before and have taught us the Christ faith. Remember Paul’s words to a young pastor named Timothy?

I thank God whom I serve, as did my ancestors, with a clear conscience, as I remember you constantly in my prayers night and day. As I remember your tears, I long to see you, that I may be filled with joy. I am reminded of your sincere faith, a faith that dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice and now, I am sure, dwells in you as well.

II Timothy 1:3-5

And so we give thanks for parents and grandparents (although it was lost a bit with the remembrance of September 11^th). Grandparents Day was September 11^th as well, and we pause in our prayers – giving thanks for that Christian faith – a gift of God passed on from grandparents to parents and children. And that faith is now fanned into flame as we study God’s Word and as we bring our children and grandchildren up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.

Why do we teach them God’s Word? Paul tells us later …

continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed, knowing from whom you learned it and how from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. II Timothy 3:14-15

Yes, God’s Word is there to make us wise to salvation and train us in holy living. Notice the order – first God’s Word makes us wise to salvation, and that salvation is by grace alone, through faith alone which is based on Scripture alone. How great to know we are saved not by what we do – since that falls far short. That is demonstrated when we see God’s Word telling us the holy living we need is living perfectly. That demand of perfection no one can attain – but it directs us to Jesus, our Savior.

How important for us to know that for ourselves and to teach our children. We are concerned about taking care of our children with regard to physical and emotional needs. In fact there have been those who have told me how important it is that their children do well in these areas to succeed in life. And I would agree.

However, they go on and say that later in life their child could decide for themselves to learn about Christ. Then they can study God’s Word. To this I must disagree. Children need guidance and direction from their parents and grandparents.

In addition, a concern of mine, as Pastor, is that life in this world is such a small portion of eternity. I would think we would want to be more interested in preparing them to spend an eternity in heaven rather than hell. That was Paul’s concern – that the man of God may be competent and continue in what we have learned.

May God grant that like Jesus told a concerned Martha: one thing is necessary (to study and listen to God’s Word) … and that will not be taken away.

Education Opportunities

Education Opportunities

So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed in Him, “If you abide in My word, you are truly My disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

Our Savior and Lord tells us and all who believe in Him to Abide in His Word – to study and continue to study and do His Word. “Abide” comes from the noun “abode” meaning “home”. We are to make His Word our “home.”

In order to do that, our congregations offer several opportunities to grow in Jesus’ Word. All members are encouraged to attend Bible Study so that we may know the truth and that we will be made free through the gospel.

Educational opportunities include (see the calendar for start dates):

Sunday Morning

Trinity – at 9:30 am (following our worship)

Sunday School and Bible Studies will be led by lay people

Wednesday

3:30 pm – Confirmation Classes held at Trinity

Pastor Jabs will lead this class instructing children regarding the basic teachings of the Lutheran Church. The primary purpose of this class will be to encourage belief in Jesus as Lord and Savior.

Thursday

Trinity – at 9:30 am

Pastor Jabs will lead a Study on the book of Galatians.

Saturday Morning

7:00 am – Bible Breakfast at Judi’s in Oostburg

Pastor Jabs, together with those in attendance, will look at the

Scripture readings for the next day.

Following our brief study, we will nourish out bodies by ordering off the menu.

We will be completed by 8:30 am so that you can go about your Saturday routines.

Jesus says – “Continue in My Word!”

Join us as together we grow in wisdom and stature, in favor with God and men!

The Gift of God

When dealing with those who are not real active in church, we often have things backwards – we berate them for not attending church rather than dealing with the real problem. Jesus said: If you love Me, you will do what I order. Therefore it follows that for those who are not active, their main problem is not his or her lack of church attendance or involvement, it is his or her lack of faith in Jesus.

The problem we have in the church is we want to treat the symptoms rather than the problem. This is similar to treating a person suffering from a ruptured appendix as if he just had a stomach ache. If that is all we do for him, he will surely die. Likewise, if we treat only the spiritual symptom rather than seeking out the cause, the person may well die eternally.

This also has something to say to that person who does not attend worship or the Lord’s Supper and comforts themselves with the thought these things are not necessary to be Christian. Perhaps not – but it does show that something is wrong spiritually. Jesus says: If you love Me, you will do what I order.

In much the same way this shows us how lacking in love we are in our relationship with Christ, and how much we stand in need of growth in our spiritual lives. For whenever we sin, we are not doing what Jesus ordered, but rather are following the devil, the world and our sinful flesh. For this we rightly deserve God’s wrath.

But what a wonderful message is proclaimed through the gospel. It tells us we have been justified freely by His grace. By the suffering death and resurrection of Christ our sins are completely forgiven – it is a reality.

To be sure, we are not saved by our church attendance, church work, or the good we do for others. Paul tells us by GRACE you have been saved, through FAITH – and this is not from yourselves, IT IS THE GIFT OF GOD – not by works, so that no one can boast. Jesus said if we trust Him for salvation, if we love Him at all for what He has done, if we believe that He is our One and only Savior, then we will want to do what He wants – whatever it may be.

As we begin the fall programs in our respective congregations, may God grant each of us the kind of faith a love that will respond to His words: If you love Me, you will do what I order.

Be In God's Word

As I write these Gems we are entering into a week that they say is going to be one of the worst with regard to heat and humidity in over a decade. Summer has arrived … and yet, as we look to August, the question “Where has the summer gone?” is one that is being heard over and over again. It just does not seem like it should be August yet – but it is. And for us here at church, that means making plans to get back into the full swing of things.

How fun and exciting it is for us to make these plans, especially when we realize the potential we have. God has promised us that potential, because where two or three are gathered in His name, He is there in their midst – blessing their efforts as they are done to His praise and glory.

However, plans are not always successful – even the best laid plans. Why? Because people always come up with excuses why they cannot carry out the plan – they are too busy, they have no talent, they are not qualified, and the list continues. It often reminds me of the story of Moses. It seemed as though He did not want to undertake the task the Lord had given him – people would not believe him, he could not speak. Yet the Lord asked: Who made you?

As Trinity – Town Wilson and St. Thomas, Waldo move forward looking to how best carry out their ministries in the years to come, sometimes it seems as though we do not want to undertake the task, the plan the Lord has given us – we don’t have the time, the energy, the money, the talents.

But with the Lord’s help, all excuses are done away with – He gives the time, the energy, the money, and the talents to carry out the plans that are and will be made. As we look forward to this next year in God’s grace, may we pray that God give us the strength to live our lives of His praise and glory.

Having His strength, we will gather to worship our Triune God. I would challenge each of you to make this a weekly occurrence. If this is already the case in your life, bring someone else to worship each week. Doing so, we will see the works of the Lord and give Him all praise and glory.

I would also challenge each of you to be in God’s Word this coming year. Join us in one of our Bible studies as we search the Scriptures to see God’s design for our life and the power by which we live.

We know God’s grace is sufficient for us and His power is made perfect in our weaknesses. May that power be evident in our Christian lives as we live as His children – growing in our love and service to our Lord and Savior and to one another.

Celebrate - In Worship

As we enter the first full month of summer, and the heat and humidity build up, we naturally move at a slower pace. In fact, our church calendars even reflect a somewhat lighter schedule and slower pace during the summer months as we are now in the non-festival half of the church year.

That however, does not give us reason not to celebrate. In fact, as we enter July, we know and look forward to July 4^th. The whole day – from the parade in the morning to the fireworks in the evening – is filled with celebration. But that day is not the only time we like to celebrate. Anytime anything happens in our lives, we celebrate. There are even times that I have seen people celebrate just to celebrate.

During this slower pace time of the year – a time of vacation from school and work, a time of occasional travel and outdoor recreation – it becomes easy for us to get away from our regular times of prayer, family devotions, and even church attendance. Jesus reminds us that we must always be watchful and ready even in the summer, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect Him! With this in mind, I would encourage all in our Trinity – Town Wilson and St. Thomas, Waldo families to continue with their regular prayer, home devotions and worship so that we can be joyfully and faithfully ready for our Lord’s return.

If your vacation plans include travel and you are not sure that there is a Lutheran Church where you will be staying, just visit with me after church or call me during the week. I can give you the name, address and worship times, as well as the Pastor’s name of an LCMS congregation close to where you will be. I know that you will be warmly received as visitors just as we enjoy having visitors worship with us.

As we travel through the summer, may we always celebrate – not only on July 4^th, but everyday of our lives. Why? Because we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose.

Children ages 3 through grade 6 (this coming school year) will have the opportunity to see:

We pray God’s blessings on this year’s VBS Program. May each day provide us with faith, fun and friendship.

Each day an offering will be taken for St. Mark’s Food Pantry. This offering can be in the form of non-perishable food items or a cash donation to purchase other needed items. These items may be brought to the church between July 31^st and August 14^th.

Building God's Family

Having just come through the month of May and heading into June, my thoughts were on Mothers and Fathers. We have already observed Mother’s Day, and it won’t be long until we celebrate Father’s Day. How blessed we are to have received these wonderful gifts from God.

Mother’s and Father’s Day also give us a chance to stop and think about our children – and how God has blessed us through our children. I remember our children growing up – and now Joan and I are blessed with a granddaughter who we see growing both in wisdom and stature. Daily we can see changes in her – what she knows and what she can do.

Remember when there were the questions ”Why?” or “How come?” Then there were comments like “I can do it myself.” And maybe we still hope they would grow up and be out of those stages.

Thinking about Father’s Day, my thoughts turned to Joshua – the leader, the “Father” if you will, of Israel. What wonderful advice he gave to the children of Israel …

Now therefore fear the Lord and serve Him in sincerity and in faithfulness. Put away the gods that your fathers served beyond the River and in Egypt, and serve the Lord. And if it is evil in your eyes to serve the Lord, choose this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your fathers served in the region beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.

As we look around us – both at Trinity and St. Thomas – how much God has blessed us in our congregations. We live in a changing world and He has given us tremendous opportunities and challenges to reach out with His love and forgiveness. As a congregation, my prayer is that our dedication would be – as Joshua says – to serve the Lord.

The apostle Paul points out that it is the love of Christ controls us, … that those who live might no longer live for themselves but for Him who for their sake died and was raised.

How can we best serve the Lord? We need to take seriously where we are … and where we are going. God’s Word, His love and forgiveness is meant for everyone. And He has promised His word … shall not return to me empty, but it shall succeed in the thing for which {He} sent it.

God has placed us at such a time as this to build His family. May we seek His will – looking to Him as to how we can best serve and obey Him, our Lord and Savior.

Easter Sunday – what a wonderful opportunity each of us has to again join in the celebration of the Savior’s resurrection. It is true … death, hell, and Satan himself did not have the power to keep Christ in the grave. Christ conquered them all. The grave is empty because Christ is alive!

With that news, we all look forward to the Easter services – the music and the flowers. Others have also commented on how nice it is to see the number of people at Easter services. And of course, it is always nice to see people in the Lord’s house gathering for worship.

But why come at Easter if you have no interest in returning until Christmas or Easter again? Don’t you wonder at what kind of thoughts are going through peoples’ minds to make them think that somehow all is well with their souls if they just come at those two times of the year?

The truth is that every Sunday is really a mini Easter. Each week our worship centers on a Savior who was born in Bethlehem, who went to the cross of Calvary (in order to die for mankind’s sins), and who rose again as the conqueror of sin, death and Satan.

Each week – in fact daily – Christians realize they need the Savior and His Word in their life. All who are serious about their faith understand that Christ is the focal point of life. Living a life pleasing to the Lord is not about coming to church at Easter or Christmas or any other holiday for that matter. Rather it is about the Savior being the center of everything a child of God does.

Each of us must ask ourselves as Easter comes this year …

V Where is the Savior in my life?

V What role does He play?

V Is He the center of things or is He relegated to the background and I just plug into Him a few times a year.

V How important is your Lord to you?

You do not need to speak words to tell anyone your answers. Your actions have long ago answered the question. But the good news we have is that Jesus died for all, and with Him there is forgiveness. He has the power through Word and Sacrament to work a change in our lives.

May the Holy Spirit increase our faith that Easter is not a onetime thing, but rather the beginning of an every Sunday opportunity to be drawn ever closer to the Risen Christ.

Christ is Risen! He is risen indeed!

Regular Church Attendance May Save Your Life

We live in a society that is very health conscious. In addition to what we do to take care of ourselves, there are countless diet centers and exercise clinics to help us watch our weight and stay fit. Together with this health consciousness, there has been and is an emphasis on safety as well.

The other day I ran across an article that dealt with safety and protection. I found it rather interesting, so thought you might like to read it …

Regular Church Attendance May Save Your Life

Paul Harvey reported of a 73 year old man who had been pinned beneath his farm tractor for four days and nights in driving rain and a terrible storm. Concerned friends went to see about him just in time. It seems that he is going to survive the ordeal, but he will lose a leg below the knee.

Several newspapers have picked up on this little story and have centered upon the amazing fact that a 73 year old man could live after being pinned beneath a tractor for four days and nights in such inclement weather.

But what is even more amazing is the reason why his friends were caused to check on him. One fellow said it best: “He missed prayer meeting on Wednesday night!” That is all! Yes! Simply missing one service at church compelled his friends to check on him.

This man’s faithfulness to the Lord’s church saved his life.

But even more important than saving and protecting our physical life is the safety and protection that is afforded to our spiritual life by regular church attendance. This does not mean that by simply attending church we are assured of a place in heaven, but by attending church, the message of the victory won by Jesus over sin, death and the devil is made known to us.

Hearing that message, we also hear Jesus’ promise to us that because He lives, we too shall live. That was the assurance Jesus gave to a grieving Martha as He said: I am the Resurrection and the Life. He who believes in Me will live, even though he dies; and whoever lives and believes in Me will never die.

Safety and protection belong to us for time and eternity – the safety and protection that belong to us through faith in Jesus. That faith is strengthened as we gather to worship our God. The author of the book of Hebrews tells us: Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another …

May our prayer be that God would give us the strength and guidance for regular church attendance throughout the year. For as we attend worship services, we are encouraged in our faith as we hear the good news of our salvation. Thanks be to God!

People of the Passion

The overall theme for our Lenten season this year is People of the Passion. It highlights a number of important people from the events of the Passion of Our Lord. As we examine these People of the Passion, we will once again be presented with the story of God’s salvation during Lent, Holy Week, and Easter Sunday.

In God's Hands

For those of you who do not know, Joan and I tend to be planners. For instance, when we go on a trip, we pretty much know where we are going and what we will be doing when we get there. If there is the need for a hotel stop along the way, we usually have the reservations made and know where we will be laying our heads at night.

A few weeks ago, we went to Door County with a couple other pastors and their wives. We had a great time – but it was interesting as well. We left here on Sunday and arrived in time to unpack and watch the Super Bowl together. But after the game was over, and the question was asked “What’s the plan?”, the eight of us got into a discussion about having – or not having – plans when we are on vacation. And so the plan for our next 36 to 48 hours was “no plan”.

In a way, isn’t that the way our lives go? What’s the plan? You and I may have our course laid out (or so we think), only to find out things have changed and don’t go according to our plan. Instead God has a different plan for us and our lives. And then we may even become a bit upset or frustrated because we maybe don’t like the plan God has for us. But the good news, the comfort is that even though the plans may be different, God’s perspective is the best.

Jeremiah put that thought this way: For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for wholeness and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.

So what happens when things don’t go our way? When things don’t go according to our plan? Do we have that same conviction as we go about our tasks from day to day?

When we get up, when we go to bed, when we go to work and tackle the problems of another day, do we do so knowing that God knows the plans He has for us? That was the assurance of Jeremiah – he knew God’s plans were not for evil, but rather for a future and a hope. The same could also be said of King David who knew that his times were in God’s hands.

Throughout the past eight to ten weeks, how evident that has also been in my life. My plans were not to have surgery; my plans were not to be out for two months (especially over Christmas). But God had other plans – plans with a future and hope. Today I thank God for being our awesome God who does not leave us or forsake us – a God who knows us by name and holds us in His hands.

I also thank God for each of you … for your prayers, your help, for being God’s instruments during this time. That too was a part of God’s plan. Without your prayers and help, I know that I would not be where I am today; I know that the same is true for Trinity and St. Thomas.

My encouragement for you today is to continue as God’s instruments – and know that no matter what, God has plans … for you (for us), plans for wholeness and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope. Be sure to keep me as your Pastor (and our congregations) in your prayers so that we see ourselves where we are … in His hands.

Will Tomorrow Be Different?

While Pastor has been out recuperating from his surgery, we entered a new year – in fact a month of that new year is almost over. Is that New Year different for you? For me? As we continue through 2011, please consider the following devotional thought by Herman Gockel …

It was New Year’s Eve. The winter sky was clear and the evening air crisp as little Tommy and his parents walked hand in hand toward the lighted church at the far end of the street.

After several moments of thoughtful silence the boy looked up at his mother and earnestly inquired: “Mommy, will tomorrow really be different?”

Not sure what was in the youngster’s mind, his mother replied: “Why – what do you mean?”

“When Daddy was reading at the supper table tonight,” Tommy explained, “he said that tomorrow God would give us a brand new year … Will He?”

“Yes, dear. It will be a brand new year,” she assured the inquiring 5-year-old.

Tommy thought a while and then, with the brilliant insight reserved only for candidates for kindergarten, he inquired eagerly: “Well, if it’s new, will it be different?”

Perhaps each of us would do well to ponder Tommy’s question … Will this brand new year that lies ahead be any different from the old? Or will it be merely a carbon copy, a repeat, a rerun of the year {that has come to an end}.

Our heavenly Father does not expect the new year to be the same as the old. Not for those who will spend the new year in the spiritual fellowship of His Son! For them He expects the coming year to be not only new but also different.

He expects next year to be different for you and me, because we are to “grow in grace and in the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ” (II Peter 3:18). We are to “grow up into Him … which is the Head, even Christ.” (Ephesians 4:15).

For those who are growing up in Christ the future can never be exactly the same as the past. Each day, each year is different. Each day, each year is richer in the personal experience of His grace. For with every passing scene of life the believer is growing up into the stature of Jesus Christ, His Savior.

We are not doing violence to the words of Paul if we paraphrase them to read: “Therefore, if any man be in Christ, he is constantly becoming a new creature; old things are constantly passing away; behold, all things are constantly becoming new.” (II Corinthians 5:17)

And so, to little Tommy’s question we would answer: Yes, Tommy, the brand new year which God will {gives} will be different.

It will be different because you and I and all who believe in Jesus are going to do everything we possibly can, with God help, to make it different.

Christmas 2010

Greetings in the name of the Babe of Bethlehem,

Once again it is Christmas. What a joy it is each year to be reminded … unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. Then to go with the shepherds to Bethlehem and find a new family – Mary, Joseph, and the baby (our Savior) lying in the manger.

Perhaps it is for this very reason that Christmas has become known as a “family holiday.” I know that as I was growing up, Christmas was at my Grandma’s house. All of my Dad’s brothers and sisters and their families were there. Our family – although it has been difficult with the children scattered – has also tried to be together on (or at least near) Christmas. This year, God-willing, the family will be together for a bit on Christmas Day and the day following as we all travel to Omaha for the Baptism of the granddaughter we await. It seems like the place to be at Christmas is with family.

As I thought about this, I began to wonder if that is all people think about at Christmas time. My hope and prayer is that it is not. Yes, it is good to be home for the holidays – for Christmas, but Christmas is much more. It is about a gift – The Gift of God’s love in His Son Jesus Christ. And no matter where we are at during this busy season, no matter who we are with, we have God’s Christmas gift. Surely to us a Savior has been born. He is Christ the Lord.

In this season of glad tidings, we send our special thanks to God for all His blessings to us:

V The blessing of His Son and the new life we have in Him.

V His mercies which are new to us every morning.

V Each of you – our family and friends in Sheboygan and Waldo.

As we continue to work together as family and friends here in Sheboygan and Waldo, may we each remember the true message of Christmas – our sins are forgiven and heaven is opened for us through the Babe of Bethlehem.

May God grant each of you a very Merry Christmas and a blessed New Year.

Thanks - for Christmas!

The holiday season is upon us – Thanksgiving is over and the busyness of Christmas is not far off. However, for us as Christians, the emphasis for thanksgiving should not be on only one day in November, but a constant expression of thanks to God for all the blessings God has given to us. Looking at our lives and recognizing our blessings from God, we can pray the following:

Thank you, God, for little things that often come our way. The things we take for granted but don’t mention when we pray. The unexpected courtesy. The thoughtful, kindly deed. A hand reached out to help in time of sudden need. Oh make us more aware, dear God, of little daily graces. That come to us with “sweet surprises” from never-dreamed-of-places.

Yes, thank God for little things. But at the same time, we should thank Him for all things in our lives – both great and small. We are now officially in the Advent Season – and during this holy season, our hearts turn to peace and joy … and to Mary’s little boy! At the same time our hearts should be filled with thanks – thanks for Mary and Joseph who traveled to Bethlehem; thanks that while they were there, the Virgin Mary gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in swaddling cloths and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn.

That Babe was none other than the Son of God who came into the world to redeem mankind. Through His perfect life, His suffering, His death, and His victorious resurrection, He redeemed mankind. What a blessing for us – eternal life through the infant Jesus. What a glorious, glad and bright time of the year.

Preparing for the Christmas season, may we not think thanksgiving is over. As dedicated, grateful Christians may our hearts be filled with thanks to God for His gift of eternal life and for all the blessings of our lives.
